A new version of the Palm Desktop was released by palmOne last week for its models, and while reports were generally good, some users have reported problems with the new version.
Installation has forced some users to reinstall the desktop conduits for third party applications such as Pocket Mirror, Backup Buddy, and VersaMail, among others.
Additional issues are related to the new version of the Outlook conduit included with the Palm Desktop update. Some pre-existing issues have been solved, including a problem checking off tasks using DateBk5 on the handheld.
However, users are reporting that some problems have not been solved, most notably an issue that creates duplicate appointments when an appointment is edited on the handheld and an alarm goes off on the desktop. Even if the item is not changed in any way in Outlook on the desktop, duplicate events can be created during synchronization if the same appointment has been edited on the handheld. Some users have reported that using PocketMirror XT instead of the palmOne Outlook conduits solves the duplication problem.
Reports from Mac users have been more positive. New conflict resolution options included with the Mac version of the updated Palm Desktop allow Mac users to use both iSync and Palm Desktop conduits simultaneously. It is now possible to use iSync to sync only iCal data and use the Palm Desktop conduit to sync only contact information, for example. Improved iSync compatibility also includes the ability to sync both address fields between the handheld and the desktop computer.

Enhancements to Palm Desktop 4.1.4 for Windows include updated Palm Outlook conduits for the Tungsten T3 and Tungsten E. The update adds support for the new Birthday, web site, and instant messaging fields in the Contacts application, as well as the ability to sync home, work, and other addresses.
The new fields in the updated personal information management applications (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Memos) will only synchronize with corresponding fields on the handheld. Synchronization with Older Handhelds is supported, but the new fields will not synchronize to the handheld.
Palm Desktop 4.1.4 for Windows requires a Pentium PC with Windows 98, NT 4.0, 2000, ME, or XP with a minimum of 16 MB of RAM, 50 MB of hard disk space, and one available USB or serial port.
Palm Desktop 4.2.1 for Mac enables synchronization of a palmOne handheld with the Date Book, Address Book, To Do, Memo Pad, Note Pad, and Voice Memo applications, as well as backup functionality for Palm Photos.
Additional features include the Send to Handheld droplet, version 1.3, which allows users to send photos and audio files to a palmOne handheld or expansion card, as well as improved compatibility with Mac OS 10.3.
